My Tribute To Eddie Guerrero

By now you've read the many tributes to Eddie Guerrero that have been posted here, but I would like to post my own. I've only been a fan of professional wrestling for about five years now, and unfortunately have missed out on a lot of what has happened during Eddie Guerrero's illustrious career. I know he was a part of WCW before he came to the WWE and has had many memorable matches. When I first heard about his passing last night, all I could say was "What?". I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. It seemed like it was only yesterday that Eddie was on TV entertaining the crowd as he always does and there were no apparent signs that he was in poor health. Ever since then, my night just seemed weird. It felt like I was in a bad dream that I couldn't wake up from and I just didn't want to believe that Eddie was truly gone. I watched the RAW tribute tonight and it was very classy. I teared up during the opening moments of RAW, but I laughed as they showed some of the more humorous moments that Eddie has had, such as spraying Big Show with sewage back when they were feuding over the United States Championship. Like many of the wrestlers said, Eddie knew how to work the crowd. He could make you laugh one moment, and cry the next. Eddie was a stellar performer that will never be replaced and I would like to extend my most sincerest condolences to his friends and family. There are a couple of Eddie moments that I can remember that I would like to share. You may or may not have heard me say this before, but one of the moments I remember was back when Eddie had come back to the WWE after getting his act together. One of his first feuds that he had since returning was with Rob Van Dam. They feuded over RVD's Intercontinental title and one of the matches they had for the title was a ladder match. At some point during the match, a fan jumped over the security barrier, got into the ring, and knocked over the ladder that Eddie was standing on. All this happened during a time when I was still a bit of a mark and I thought that the matches those two competitors had were some of the best matches I had ever seen up to that point. I remember the first time Eddie won the WWE Championship when he defeated Brock Lesnar at No Way Out 2004. I knew it was going to happen, but when I saw it actually happen I was so excited that I almost cried because that was during the time when I felt that Eddie truly deserved the title. Another moment that sticks out in most wrestling fans' minds is the end of Wrestlemania 20 when Chris Benoit won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time after defeating Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a very hard fought battle. Eddie came out and celebrated with Benoit, hugging each other and having a good cry. To close this column, I hope that Eddie has found peace whereever he may be and I hope that no one will ever forget the wrestler known as Latino Heat. |
